We get it; you want to create the perfect hairstyle while looking like the whole thing is effortless. The good thing is that there are many ways to secure the look you want without resorting to lengthy stays in front of the mirror, expensive hair care products or difficult techniques to master. 

Securing the appearance of thicker hair easily and simply with a few tips and tricks. Just by mastering a selection of skills, you’ll be well on your way to securing the look you want.

 

Tip 1. Use a shampoo designed to thicken your hair

One of the cheapest options there is for thicker hair is a specialised shampoo that’s purpose-designed. Incorporate a thickening shampoo into your shower routine between two and three times a week. That’s all you need to see the benefits; any more than this and you risk drying your ends out. Intersperse this shampoo with your regular one, and finish each application with a generous dollop of conditioner so things don’t get too frizzy.

Tip 2. Change your diet

We’re not suggesting a full-blown diet makeover, but a few strategic food swaps can add lustre, shine and thickness to your otherwise dull mane. Look for foods rich in Omega-3s such as oily fish and flaxseeds (which can be taken as an oil or powder, or sprinkled over meals), and gravitate towards protein-rich foods. As well as these, ensure you’re incorporating iron and B-group vitamins into your diet to reap the benefits on your scalp.

Tip 3. Avoid heat or aggressive styling...

Sometimes it’s simpler to run a comb through your hair to tame the mess, or to turn to the blow drier when you’re running late in the morning. Our advice? Don’t. Applying too much heat or friction to your strands means you run the risk of damage and breakage and, with fewer hair follicles atop your head, your hair is bound to look a whole lot thinner.

Tip 4. ...instead, let your hair dry naturally

Easier said than done, especially in the winter, letting your hair dry naturally is one of the best things you can do for your hair’s longevity. As we said before, keeping your hair in good health means less breakage down the track; and more long strands on your head means the whole thing will look even thicker.

Tip 5. Choose your haircut wisely

Work with your hairdresser to choose a haircut that suits your face shape and hair texture - and one that gives the illusion of thicker hair. If you have long hair, adopting layers helps. And if you have hair that’s on the shorter side (or you’re losing hair in various patches across your scalp), a close-crop will do wonders for the illusion of thickness.

Tip 6. Avoid the sun

It’s no secret; the sun dries everything out and, once again, makes your hair look thinner, drier and more brittle. In the heat of summer, protect your strands from the harsh glow of the Australian sun by wearing a hat. Or go one step better and purchase a spray-on, leave-in sunscreen designed for your hair. Not only will you have less chance of breakage, you’ll thank yourself for giving you stronger, softer locks.
